Proof of ID/Address
To help prevent fraud, the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) verifies the identity of every permit, license and non-driver ID applicant before establishing his or her identity on the MVC database.
Specific documents must be used to apply for or renew permits, licenses and non-driver ID cards. Under State law, applicants must identify themselves through MVC’s 6 Point ID program, and verify their address, at EACH stage of the process
MVC has created a 6 Point ID “Quick Picker” to help motorists determine if the point value of their documents is at least six (6). To meet state law, the point total must always be at least 6 points. Tabulate your points here. This ID verification program also requires non-U.S. citizens to prove that they are authorized to be in this country under federal law. Documents that may be used to verify this authorization are worth up to four (4) points.
New Jersey does not issue driver licenses to applicants who cannot prove they are legally authorized to be in this country.
